Stitch Fix: Review

Have you heard about subscription clothing services?  I had been seeing ads on Facebook for awhile and I was really intrigued, so I went ahead and tried one called Stitch Fix.  Here’s how it works….you fill out a style profile, along with some stats and preferences about yourself and your style, and then a stylist hand picks 5 pieces just for you.  They are mailed to you (with your choice of frequency) and you have three days to try them on and decide what you want to keep.  If you keep all five items in your box, you get a 25% discount.  The box even comes with an envelope to mail back your unwanted items, so you don’t have to worry about shipping!

The cost of Stitch Fix starts with a $20 styling fee, however if you choose to keep anything in your box, you can put that $20 toward what you want to keep.  The only way you are “out” the $20 is if you decide not to keep anything that was sent to you.

Before I tried it, I read some reviews and found out that making a Pinterest board is very helpful for the stylists to get to know you and to really be able to capture your personality.  And that’s just what I did- I created a specific Pinterest board for my stylist, and then posted the link to my profile on Stitch Fix.

When the box arrived, I was so excited to dig in and see what was it it!

The first thing I found in the box was this flowery shirt.  I wasn’t too crazy about the print, but I did love the arm detail where it looked like the sleeves were tied.  I will reassure you, it was a lot cuter on than it was on the hanger.  I ultimately decided to send this one back because it didn’t fit me right.

The second item I tried on was a cute plaid top.  I love plaid, and this was totally my style!  If it would have been cheaper, I would have kept this shirt.  It was great quality and so adorable.

Inside the box was also a striped dress that was definitely something I would wear!  It was very flattering on, but was a little too long.  Again, the price was a little steep, and I don’t really need any dresses right now.

Another item I received was this comfy navy blue knit sweater.  I love how soft and versatile this item is!  I ended up keeping this and have already worn it!

The final item I received in my first “Fix” was a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans.  (I am not really sure what that means!)  They were so very comfortable, and although I would typically prefer them without the rip, I really liked them.  I ended up sending these back, but only to exchange for a different size!

Overall, I really had a fun time with my first time using Stitch Fix!  I am very busy and don’t get time to go shopping for myself, so it’s really convenient to have a stylist do it for me!  The items are fairly decent quality as well.  Due to the price point of a lot of the items, this isn’t something that I could make a regular occasion, but it would be fun to try from time to time!

Owlet Smart Sock and Baby Care: Review

In my review of mom and baby products, this one is by far the most technologically innovative and one that has saved me many precious hours of sleep as a mom!   The product that I am blogging about today is called the Owlet Smart Sock.  Affectionately known in our house as “The Owl.”  I received The Owl a few weeks before my second son was born and was very excited to try it.  The Owlet is composed of three different elements.  First, there is the Smart Sock.  The Smart Sock is a sock that you put on the  baby’s foot.  There are different sizes of socks to adjust to your ever growing and changing sweet little babe!   In the sock is a monitor that is able to give you readings of the baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels.  (It’s like the one that they put on your finger when you go to the doctor sometimes….the one that’s like a chip clip and has the red light…)  The second element is the Base Station.  The Base Station is your notification system.  It is designed to flash green if all of the baby’s readings are within the normal range, and has other alerting colors to let you know what’s up.  **See below for information on different alerts**  The third element is the smartphone app.  This is not a required part of having and using the Owlet, but I really enjoy it.  The Base Station is still designed to alert you if your baby’s readings are abnormal or if there is an issue, but if you have the app, it will ALSO alert you, and you can see live readings as the Smart Sock is working.  SO COOL!

**Owlet alerts:  The Base Station is designed to alert you about what’s going on with your baby/the Owlet in general.  A GREEN flashing light means all is good.  Baby’s oxygen and heart rate are in the normal range.  A YELLOW alert means that the Smart Sock either fell off of baby’s foot or that it is incorrectly placed.  A BLUE notification occurs when the sock is unable to communicate with the Base Station via Bluetooth.  And finally, the Owlet is designed to alert you and will flash RED if baby has a high heart rate, low heart rate or low oxygen.**

I honestly think this is one of the coolest and most useful parenting tools I have ever used.  As a parent, when your child is sleeping, you are always wondering if they are okay and what’s going on.  With the Owlet, I am able to sleep knowing that I will be alerted if something comes up with my baby.  And sleep is GOLD!! I also love that on the app I can check my little one’s heart rate and oxygen levels.  It will also tell me if he is wiggling and not asleep.

Here’s an example of what the app looks like on my phone:

I would highly recommend the Owlet to any parent, new or experienced!  This is also a great gift idea if you know someone who is expecting.  I did have one technical issue with the Owlet and working with the customer service team was a great experience!  They were knowledgeable and solved my issue in a timely manner.  One note: Owlet is not a medical device, so it shouldn’t be used in place of a medical monitor if your doctor sends you home with one.

Boppy Pillow: Review

As I continue on my quest to review mom and baby products, one of the most versatile and used items in our house is the Boppy Pillow.  I received my first Boppy as a gift at my baby shower when I was pregnant with my first son.  You are probably thinking- “what’s so special about a pillow?”

Well, well….I will tell you what’s special about the Boppy!  It’s not JUST a pillow- it’s so much more.  The Boppy is shaped like a U.  The Boppy is great to use starting from day one of baby’s life.  The baby can be propped up on the Boppy to make nursing/feeding sessions a breeze.  Newborns are so little and so fragile and the Boppy helps keep them in the correct position while allowing your arms and hands to be comfortable and keeping your posture upright.  You just place the Boppy on your lap with the open end of the U facing you.  Then you put baby where ever you want him or her where it’s most comfy for both of you.  This same method can be used for big brothers and sisters to “hold” their new sibling!  It works like a charm.

As a newborn, another way I used the Boppy was to use it to prop baby up so I could look at him face on.  (Of course this is usually followed by a lot of baby talk and cutesy noises, and LOTS of photos just as moms do…)

When baby gets a little older, the Boppy can be used to work on tummy time, which strengthens the neck and back muscles, and stretches the legs.  You simply place baby on their tummy inside the U of the pillow.  (Below is my happy little guy working on those neck muscles!)

And currently my littlest is working on sitting on his own.  The Boppy has been great for this.  I put him sitting up and scoot his little bottom into the U of the pillow.  It’s enough support that he doesn’t fall over and also the rounded parts of the pillow give him something to brace himself with as he tries to balance.  It’s really the cutest thing to watch!  (Another tip that I learned from my son’s awesome daycare teachers: If you have 2 Boppys, you can stack them to create even more support when baby is JUST learning to sit up!)

My littlest man is 7 months old and I still use the Boppy every. single. day.  Yes.  I really do.  I use it for every feeding!  My husband knows that when I sit down to feed the little guy, my Boppy better be handy!  And truth be told, when baby number two came, my Boppy was packed in my hospital bag.  That was one thing I learned after not having the Boppy in the hospital with my first baby…I NEEDED the Boppy when I had my second- hospital pillows just aren’t the same.  You live and you learn!

Overall, I think the Boppy pillow is definitely a new mom or even an experienced mom essential!  It’s so versatile and incredibly useful.  And hey, when you’re done with it you can use it as your very own neck pillow….I kid, I kid…

I wanted to include this adorable note I got with my pillow!

Baby Booster Protein: Review

I have received many questions from people about different “mom” products that I use for my kiddos and people have even asked me for advice on what to give a new mom!  I am happy to share my reviews and experiences.  I am starting with a product called Baby Booster, which is a protein supplement good for prenatal and postnatal use.

As a busy mom, a lot of times it’s really hard to prep a meal or even a snack, and that is why I have always been a fan of protein shakes- even prior to motherhood.  The amount of protein that a woman should get can be hard to fulfill so I often turn to protein replacements.  Over the years I have tried A LOT of different protein products, but find that I really like shakes the best.  Shakes are easy because you can simply grab a shaker bottle, add some liquid to the powder and go, OR you can doctor them up and create a gourmet protein treat, which is what I like to do.

Baby Booster has 20 grams of protein, as well as vitamins and DHA.  (DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is found in fish oil that is very important during pregnancy since it helps build baby’s eyes, brain, and nervous system.)  It’s also OB-GYN approved for prenatal and postnatal use.   What’s really awesome is that Baby Booster gives you energy and has been known to reduce morning sickness!  (YEAH!)  I used to think that after I had my baby, nutrition didn’t matter as much, but it most definitely does!   Your body is recovering from the major feat of carrying a child for 9+ months, and needs to be fed the right things to recover.  And although I am not pregnant, I am currently nursing, and my body needs protein and vitamins, among many other things, to be able to provide milk for my baby.

After having a second child, I found that I am definitely more tired than I was with just one.  It could be the simple fact that two kids wear me out, or that I am older than I was before!  Either way, I love being a mom, but in the craziness of being a mom, sometimes I forget about ME.  But I have found (and I will say this over and over and over and over again) that the best way for me to care for my kids, is to also care about myself.  When I am healthy, I am a better mom.  Simple fact.  Three things that I feel are important when it comes to keeping me healthy are: sleep, nutrition and exercise.  And although Baby Booster doesn’t help with sleep, it does help with nutrition and exercise.  When I am feeding my body stuff that is good for me…protein, vitamins, etc., my body works better.  And when I do get time to head to the gym and exercise, I make the most of it by fueling my body up afterward with high quality protein.

Baby Booster has 4 different flavors: Tahitian Vanilla, Kona Mocha, Pina Colada and Superfruit Punch.  Although they are all good, my FAVORITE is the Tahitian Vanilla because not only is it tasty, but it’s SO versatile.  What I like to do is put about a cup of ice in the blender, then milk (any type), blueberries, chia seeds, a banana and the Tahitian Vanilla powder.  Talk about a treat!!  It tastes like a milkshake!

I have had a positive experience with Baby Booster protein powder and I think you will, too!  (And keep in mind, you don’t have to be pregnant or postnatal to benefit from Baby Booster shakes!)
